THE CONDITION OF OTHERS ZINE
The condition of others zine is a collaborative project between The Red Bird Youth Collective, The Silent Maroon Rabbit Gang and visual artist Siobhan McGibbon. Funded by the National Youth Council of Ireland under the Artist in Youth Work Residency Scheme, the zine has been created in partnership with artists from CAMHS Day Hospital, Platform 9 3/4 at Merlin Park Hospital. Galway Arts Centre facilitated the project.
Red Bird Youth Collective and the Silent Maroon Rabbit Gang from CAMHS worked over five weeks to create a zine. The project expands concepts of identity that arose during the Red Bird Youth Collective's last exhibition in 2015, The Condition of Others. The artists developed a series of questions that questioned the human experience, reflecting on society's demands and assumptions on young identity. Each week the questions were passed from the Red Bird Youth Collective (based in Galway arts centre) and the Silent Maroon Rabbit Gang (based in CAMHS Day Hospital, Platform 9 3/4 at Merlin Park Hospital) and interrogated through their unique modes of expression. Through deciphering their visual answers, the groups found commonalities in their experiences and questioned concepts of personal and assumed identity in a wider context.
Red Bird Youth Collective is a visual art group for young people living in Galway city & county. Established in September 2011 by Galway Arts Centre, it has received funding from The Arts Council & Galway County Council to deliver large scale, youth-led projects in collaboration with professional artists. Red Bird members work together on a diverse range of projects, including visual art, film, architecture, digital media, performance and literature projects.
