Polymorphism
Red bird youth collective, Galway Arts Centre, 2018
Polymorphism is an exhibition by Red Bird Youth collective, developed with visual artist Siobhan McGibbon. The project emphasised mould-making processes and the manipulation of form. The students experimented with alginate, plaster bandage lifecasting, two-part plaster moulds to create their polymorphic wax forms.
Speaking about the process, a member of the collective stated: “We chose this word as the title to our process based sculpture project as we felt that each of us created our sculpture about an unseen part of us; the part of us that is not necessarily obvious in the people we are on the outside every day. We learned many practical skills throughout this project from sculptor Siobhan McGibbon, such as mould making with clay and rubber in order to realise our wax-finished pieces.”
